236px Hurricane Irene resized 600

Dear Access Northeast Customers,

A National Weather Advisory is currently in effect for the entire Eastern Seaboarddue to the projected path of Hurricane Irene.

While the storm now appears to be hitting the Carolina Coast as a Category 2 Hurricane and then weakening to a Tropical Storm as it heads north towards New England, the Access Northeast Team is taking nothing for granted.  We are busy making preparations to ensure that our customers’ uptime is maintained to the best of our ability:

  • Additional Access Northeast personnel, including senior management, will be on site in Marlboro, MA and Waterbury, CT during and immediately after the storm to deal with any issues that may occur.
  • Emergency Generators in Marlboro, MA were tested last weekend and the Diesel Fuel tanks were topped off.  We have enough Diesel Fuel to maintain loads in Marlboro for 2 to 3 days.  Both of our emergency fuel suppliers have been contacted to make advance arrangements for re-fueling after the storm.
  • Emergency Generators in Waterbury Connecticut were serviced by our Maintenance vendor within the past two weeks and have been additionally tested since then with no reported issues.
  • All loose materials in and around these Facilities have been removed and secured to avoid possible wind damage
  • Both the Waterbury and Marlboro Data Centers were built to withstand strong winds, so  we are confident that both structures are very sound.
  • Emergency supplies for both Data Centers have been brought onsite

If you experience any issues, please contact our Network Operations Center at 508-281-7600 Option 4 or at support@axsne.com.

We will also do our best to keep the Access Northeast Twitter Account active with live updates as conditions permit and you can follow us at http://twitter.com/#!/accessnortheast or use the button to the right.

Tips For Keeping Your IT and Data Center Equipment Cool This Summer

Erik Radvon, Network Operations Technician

eradvon@axsne.com

Sunny weather has finally arrived here in the Northeast, and following some simpleaccess-northeast-summer-sun
steps can help keep your IT equipment cool, safe, and operational during even the hottest summer days.

One of the easiest ways to avoid heat related damage to your Access Northeast provided equipment (routers, firewalls, switches, etc) is to keep all devices stored properly in a cool, dry place. Leave enough space around all sides of the equipment—-a few inches will do—-so that air can circulate and keep the device within operational temperature range. While a climate controlled environment is great, even adding a small fan to equipment storage areas can help keep air flowing.

For our colocation customers, we maintain a steadily controlled environment here in the Access Northeast data centers, but inserting blanking panels in vacant rack spaces can significantly increase airflow into your cabinet and drastically cut down on the amount of warm exhaust air re-circulated.

The diagram below shows two cabinets, one with a vacant space between groups of equipment, and the other with blanking panels in place. In the cabinet without blanking panels, the warm exhaust air from the devices in the rack accumulates in the cabinet and raises the ambient temperature. In the cabinet with blanking panels installed, the hot exhaust air is caught in the airflow of the data center and moved away from the cabinet and, most importantly, the vital IT equipment inside.

Following these simple steps can help keep your IT equipment cool throughout the summer. As always, if you need any assistance or have any questions, please contact our 24x7 Technical Support Team at support@axsne.com or 508-281-7600 opt. 4. Have a great summer!

What is the Cloud and How Does Access Northeast Deliver It?

Michael Montiverdi, Director of Managed Services

mmontiverdi@axsne.com

The term “Cloud Computing” is one of the biggest buzzwords in the IT industry today, but also one of the most misunderstood. It means many things to many people. As an engineer at Access Northeast who manages our Parthenon Cloud platform, I’m often asked the question “What is the Cloud?” usually followed quickly by “How can the Cloud help our business?”

From an engineering standpoint, Cloud Computing is simply an approach to delivering IT Services. From the end user perspective, Cloud Computing is a delivery method that allows access to critical IT computing resources when they are needed and where they are needed most.

You may have seen the Microsoft commercial where a couple is stranded at an airport due to a flight delay. One of the couple says “What should we do?” and the other replies “To the Cloud!” Off they go to their laptop to watch a TV show, instantly. This is a real world example of what Cloud computing is and what it addresses. Cloud Infrastructure can grow with IT demands in real time in order to provide powerful computing services to end users.
In the IT world, Cloud computing can be broken down to three types of Clouds: Public, Private and Hybrid.

A Public Cloud is an IT infrastructure made available to the general public and is owned by a company providing Cloud Resources or Services. Some of the household names in this field include Amazon’s EC2 Public Cloud services, along with Microsoft’ Azure Cloud, the Google AppEngine, and others. The term “Public” often causes confusion in regards to Cloud, but it simply means a Cloud Infrastructure that is available over the Public Internet which may or may not have security, and not solely for the use of the company which owns and operates it.

A Private Cloud is an IT infrastructure usually owned and operated by a company or entity for its sole, private use. Private Cloud resources are consumed by that entity and are not available to the general public.
Private Cloud Computing can also be hosted by an external service provider, such as Access Northeast. In this case it is referred to as a Virtual Private Cloud. Any corporation or business can build a Private Cloud to deliver their own resources to end-users, or they can partner with a third party service provider like Access Northeast to design, build, provision, host and manage a dedicated Virtual Private Cloud for them. While the server and storage capacity are derived from a common, pooled source, each company that utilizes a Virtual Private Cloud may only connect via a secure connectivity method such as private Ethernet, MPLS/WAN technologies, or a dedicated, managed firewall. The major benefits of a Virtual Private Cloud are security, flexibility, performance and computing resources which include popular software licensing, server capacity, storage, bandwidth and 24x7x365 service.

A relatively new form of Cloud is the Hybrid Cloud. A Hybrid Cloud is an IT infrastructure composed of multiple Cloud computing systems which may be public or private, but usually include a mix of the two. They use common technologies which allow for the portability of data and applications amongst the differing Cloud networks. VMware is developing new technology which allows private clouds to move workloads to a Public or Virtual Private Cloud. As this service offering continues to gain traction, Hybrid Clouds will become an essential platform for all enterprises to utilize for architecting and implementing their corporate IT infrastructure.

As you can imagine, every customer has different requirements and needs as they search for the right vendor to provide them with Cloud services. Many customers have existing physical infrastructures still in production, but need to continue utilizing them in order to create the most cost efficient IT service delivery method possible. Access Northeast can provision Cloud environments that work in conjunction with your existing physical infrastructure. Think of it as a virtual Data Center, where we connect our Parthenon Cloud Resources to your existing equipment. This creates one private network which then scales on demand to provide the best end-user experience possible, at a very economical price point. Regardless of which type of Cloud works for your company –Public, Private, or Hybrid, Access Northeast can help you get there. We’re a VMware Service

Provider Partner and our Cloud technologies are standardized on the latest VMware vSphere platform, all built with industry leading components specifically with today’s Enterprises in mind.

Our Green Data Center Initiative

green data center servers 300x115 resized 600In the past, Managed Services providers have focused only on their customer’s availability.  While this will always be Access Northeast’s primary objective, we also have the ability to meet our customer’s rising interest in the ‘greening’ of data centers, instituting operational changes and infrastructure upgrades to decrease the carbon footprint of facilities.

Access Northeast is continuously looking at better ways to operate environmentally friendly facilities that benefit both the customer and the community at large.

We have implemented, and continue to pursue, many technological advances that provide maximum uptime with minimal environmental impact.

Access Northeast has made a significant commitment (money and time) in designing our data centers to be as eco-friendly as possible. Through the incorporation of newer, more advanced data center technologies, we are attempting to become an industry leader in eco-friendly cooling and power optimization. In our first phase, Access Northeast has currently deployed:

  • Power System Components that are higher in efficiency and operate with reduced emissions
  • Environment friendly building materials and design that reduce the demands on cooling to the facility
  • Ultrasonic Humidification Systems that requiring less energy and create no additional heat, unlike older steam type humidifiers

We welcome visitors to schedule a tour of our facilities to learn about how Access Northeast is doing its part to help the environment with our Green Initiative. Contact us to schedule a tour with a Sales team member today.
